In reply to your despatch No. 282 of the 31st.

October last,, transmitting copy of an application from Inspec-

armain for an extension of leave of absence with half sa- torGermain

lary for a further period of six months from 19th. March, 1899,

I have the honour to inform you that such extension for six

months may be granted without inconvenience or expense to the

public service.

2. I would point out that on the 19th. July

next Mr. Germain will have been absent on leave with half

salary for the extreme period, viz., 24 months prescribed by

No. 132 of the Colonial Regulations in respect of officers

serving in this Colony, and should ordinarily be allowed only

four months extension on half pay.

3. As it appears that Mr. Germain's health is

still bad, there would be no objection to his retirement on

pension as soon as could be arranged, for there would be no

difficulty in replacing him by an efficient officer in the

colony.
